Merriman went to three Pro Bowls as a Charger
Just a few days after returning to the lineup, Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman was placed on injured reserve with a minor injury designation. The move means Merriman will be released in a few weeks after he recovers from his calf injury and will be free to sign with another team. Merriman’s 2010 season has been as forgettable as his last two, seeing limited action in only three games. After collecting 39.5 sacks in his first three seasons, he picked up four all of last season, and none this year. He missed all but one game in the 2008 season with an injury.
Merriman will be remembered by most Chargers fans for his dominant 2006 season when he picked up 17 sacks in just 12 games. The rest of the NFL will likely also remember him for that season as well, but for a different reason. Merriman was tested positive for steroids, and was suspended for four games. This led to the creation of the “Merriman Rule,” which meant any player who tested positive for steroids during a season would be ineligible for any performance awards or the Pro Bowl. That is, unless you’re Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing. Anyways, Merriman returned with a pretty impressive 2007 season, but hasn’t done that much since then, aside from a really unecessary cameo on Entourage this year.
