One of the most fascinating storylines in the NFL this off-season was the Buffalo Bills refusal to seek an upgrade at the Quarterback position. Despite receiving shaky play last year from Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm, the Bills decided to bring back all three. The Bills then decided give Edwards first team reps all off-season and named him the Week 1 starter. Now just three weeks into the season, the Bills have decided to cut him loose. The Bills seem to have liked what they saw over the weekend after a decent performance by Fitzpatrick against the Pats. Then again, the Bills have been trying to find Jim Kelly’s successor for the past 14 years.
As bad as Edwards has been these past few years, let’s be fair. He was rushed into the job as a rookie in 2007 after being taken in the 3rd round out of Stanford. It’s not like the Bills didn’t have options this off-season, either. Some of the QB’s available through free agency or trade include Donovan McNabb, Jake Delhomme, Jason Campbell, Chad Pennington and Brady Quinn. In the draft, the Bills passed on three potential starting QB’s in Tim Tebow, Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy. As good as Fitzpatrick was last week, Edwards actually has better career numbers than him, so I’m not sure he’s going to solve Buffalo’s QB problem, either.
Edwards should find a home as a backup somewhere and may get a shot at starting again someday. Don’t expect to see him coming out of the Toronto Blue Jays bullpen anytime soon, though.
Was that last part uncalled for? Probably.

I’ve witnessed probably 1,000 first pitches in my life. That one was by far the most memorable.

It just doesn’t make any sense. The guy makes a living throwing the ball. It would have been acceptable if anyone else had done it.

Funny too, because all a first pitch is is a check down, which is all he ever throws (threw) in games anyway…

Actually Mike… I don’t know if you recall.. but Edwards took BP with the Jays and actually put one out in left. Would have been great to see this added on here! Maybe he does have a future with the Jays after all…

Ah whatever…we’ve got enough guys on this team that can hit the long ball.
