Marcum gave up five in the fifth inning, including a two-run shot to J.D. Drew

Yeah, so that sweep at Fenway didn’t happen. Shaun Marcum started strong this afternoon, but a Victor Martinez solo homer in the fourth woke the Red Sox bats in a game they eventually took 6-0. Marcum gave up five more runs in the fifth and got just one out in the sixth before getting the hook, dropping to 12-8 on the year. Though he didn’t exactly earn a shot to win this time, it should be noted that the Jays have provided him with a total of five runs of support in five starts against Boston this year.

Toronto’s bats, which tagged Jon Lester for nine runs in two-plus innings in a 16-2 win last month, failed to knock an extra-base hit, with Lester lasting seven to improve to 18-8. The win was his fifth in five starts since the Aug. 20 shelling and the seventh in his last eight outings overall.

The loss means the Jays finish 2-4 in their tour of Baltimore and Boston, leaving them at 75-74 with the Mariners, Orioles and Yankees each coming to Rogers Centre for three to wrap the home schedule. After an off-day, Shaun Hill (0-2, 4.91) gets the ball in Tuesday’s opener against Seattle’s Luke French (4-5, 4.02).

As for myself, I’m jumping at a late-season opportunity Monday to head to Detroit and take in Comerica Park for the first time since 2004. The Tigers and Royals are going head-to-head in a less-than-enticing AL Central clash with absolutely nothing on the line, which I figure will be about as exciting as the Tigers-Devil Rays game I saw on the last weekend of the season last time around. Hey, it’s a chance to see a game at a real ballpark though, so I’m all for it.
