The night Edwin Encarnacion came to life

Encarnacion accounted for all three Toronto runs

Edwin Encarnacion hasn’t gotten many hits this season, but he got a pair when they counted tonight. Scott Rolen’s “err” apparent, who came in hitting .189 in 110 at-bats, drove home a pair with a bases-loaded single in the fifth and hit a game-winning solo shot in the eighth to account for every Jays run in a 3-2 series-opening win against the Giants at Rogers Centre. If his average keeps jumping 15 points each night (it’s up to .204), Encarnacion should be hitting .400 by about mid-July.

Encarnacion wasn’t the only story — Brandon Morrow was strong for the fourth straight start, overcoming some early command issues to go six innings, giving up just a pair of runs to lower his ERA to 4.97. After walking Pat Burrell and Pablo Sandoval on four pitches each to force home a run in the first, Morrow settled in, giving up just one more on a Sandoval ground out in the sixth. Jason Frasor, Scott Downs and Kevin Gregg temporarily restored my faith in the Jays’ bullpen by tossing a scoreless inning each, with Gregg grabbing his 17th save to close it. Downs ended up with the win, running his record to 2-5.

Morrow was matched all night by Barry Zito, who picked up his first complete game of the season and just his second since 2003. Zito, who only really ran into trouble in the fifth before Encarnacion’s homer to lead off the eighth, finished having given up just four hits and a walk over eight innings.

The win is a fine way to start things off against a tough National League team, but it won’t get any easier: Despite avoiding Tiny Tim Lincecum, the Jays get to deal with the equally-untouchable Matt Cain (6-4, 2.05) tomorrow and lefty Jonathan Sanchez (5-5, 2.78), who tossed a no-hitter in 2009, on Sunday. Jesse Litsch (0-1, 27.00), who had a nightmarish return from Tommy John surgery on Sunday in Colorado, makes his first start back in Toronto tomorrow before Shaun Marcum (6-3, 3.31) goes in the finale.

  1. I think E.E only does it up against the NL!!!! Isn’t most or all of his round trippers vs. the NL?????

  2. Yeah, well he had five in one weekend against Arizona, right? Including Friday, that’s at least six of his nine. Not that it matters anymore, since he’s on his way to the minors…
