Snider doubled home the tying run and scored the winner
Alright, after holding off on getting my hopes up for a few days, I’m now ready to jump aboard the Jays’ 2010 World Series Championship bandwagon. After wrapping up with a pair of wins in Texas, Toronto took its show to Baltimore this afternoon and used a ninth inning rally to come up big again, this time coming out with a 7-6 win. Down 6-5 entering, Edwin Encarnacion shook off Buck Martinez’s mispronunciation of his name with a leadoff walk and scored on Travis Snider’s double, and Jose Bautista followed two batters later with a sac fly that brought home the winner.
Another inspiring win — one similar to the types the Jays were getting last April that got my hopes all too high. Still, it’s nice to see a team everyone is writing off come out and play well, on the road nonetheless.
Brandon Morrow struggled in his first start, giving up five runs and five walks in five innings, including a two-run shot to Miguel Tejada to tie it up in the fifth. Casey Janssen gave up the go-ahead run on a two-out single in the eighth but picked up the win — his second in as many days — behind the Jays’ second straight ninth inning rally.
Toronto scored three in the first off Brian Bergeson, then gave three back in the bottom of the inning and regained the lead in the third on a solo homer by Alex Gonzalez, his second of the season. Eventual MVP Vernon Wells was quiet for the first time, going 1-for-4 and scoring on a John Buck double.
Anyway, call it a 3-1 start with a couple more pushovers in Baltimore before Monday’s home opener against Alexis Rios and the White Sox. Dana Eveland makes his first Toronto start tomorrow night in the middle game, facing second-year righty David Hernandez.
