It don't get no better than Vernon Wells
If this is a dream, then don’t wake me up. Vernon Wells’ opening week terrorization of the Rangers continued this afternoon, when he blasted a game-tying solo shot to lead off the top of the ninth in the Jays’ 3-1 win, giving them a 2-1 series win in Texas to get the ball rolling on 2010. Here comes my prediction: Wells finishes at .350 with 100 home runs and 250 RBIs by the time this one wraps up. An exaggeration? Hardly, when you consider he’s hitting .600 and on pace for 216 and 378 at the moment.
Wells’ fourth homer in three games came off Texas closer Frank Francisco to lead off the inning and a Lyle Overbay triple started a rally to lead to another pair of runs. Casey Janssen grabbed the win in relief of Ricky Romero, who gave up just five hits and a run in seven innings. Jason Frasor closed things out in the ninth to pick up his second save in as many days.
So, playoffs? I’ll hold off on getting my hopes up for now, but I’ll gladly take a few wins at the start of a season everyone has them picking to finish last in. Next up is a three-game set in Baltimore, with Brandon Morrow making his Jays debut tomorrow afternoon in the opener.
Two things. Tomorrow is an afternoon game which is stupid. I am not thrilled with the schedule to start the season. And Wells hit a solo shot in the 9th to tie. Not a 3 run homer to take the lead.

Yeah, I found that out a little late! Just got home tonight, saw the headline and jumped the gun. Hey, the way Wells is playing, you would’ve figured it would be a five-run shot. Thanks for the heads up though…
