"You're the man!" says the Dallas Stars' number one fan
You know you’re off to a rough start when you can “stay hot” with an overtime loss. That’s what the Leafs did last night, falling 4-3 in Dallas to the Stars. The Monster (not Jayson Werth — Jonas Gustavsson) saved 32 shots in his second straight start, but James Neal’s winner three minutes into the extra period killed any hopes of a monumental two-game win streak.
With Brian Burke busy looking pissed off courtside at the Raptors opener, Toronto actually grabbed a 3-2 lead on Nikolai Kulemin’s goal 13:11 into the third period. Dallas answered though, as Mike Ribiero tipped a point shot with just under three minutes left in regulation. That set up Neal’s overtime goal, which came off a juicy rebound from The Monster.
Kulemin had a pair of goals for the Leafs — his first two of the season — and Lee Stempniak added a power play goal in the third period, his third of the year. Jason Blake had his best statistic game of the season, picking up three assists.
The Leafs are in Buffalo Friday where they’ll look to “stay hot” with another overtime or shootout loss, or perhaps if the hockey gods are smiling upon them, a win. They’ll wrap up their current five-game road swing Saturday in Montreal before coming home to face Tampa Bay on Tuesday.
one question…..are the leafs a team? or a bunch of guys? to me, I see no real sniper. Kessel is still out, and nobody is there to feed him the puck!
building for the future meant trading the first rounders for this and next year, and a second rounder in 2010.

Time will tell, my friend. One thing is for sure — Burke isn’t smiling one way or another.

I’ve already packed it in on this season.

I think they’re still an eighth place team at best, though likely closer to the bottom of the conference the way it’s looking thus far. Of course, every team goes through a funk at some point in the season — it’ll get better…
