They've been dogging Jerry Hairston all year, and now he's a hero
Wow, it sucks how one bad defensive play can turn a great game into a waste of five hours. Macier Izturis inexplicably tried for the force at second on Miguel Cabrera’s grounder between first and second with one out in the 13th last night (or this morning, as those savvy MLB International announcers reminded me, over and over and over again), tossing the ball past Erick Aybar and the Angels hopes of split out the window. The error allowed Jerry Hairston to score, giving New York at 4-3 win and a 2-0 series lead.
In all, though, a great game. A.J. Burnett’s fifth inning implosion allowed the Angels to tie it at 2-2, setting off a battle of the bullpens — one that Brian Fuentes wasn’t about to let Los Angeles win. After the Angels took 3-2 lead on Chone Figgins’ RBI single in the 11th, Fuentes did his Joe Nathan impression, coughing up a blast to Alex Rodriguez on an 0-2 pitch to extend things. That set up the Yankees’ rally in the 13th, which started with Hairston’s leadoff single.
A competitive game, and hopefully one that doesn’t end up costing us a comptetive series all around. Jered Weaver (16-8 3.75) will need a win in Monday’s Game 3, where he’ll face Little Andrew Pettitte (14-8, 4.16) to make it interesting. Meanwhile, the Dodgers and Phillies are at Citizens Bank Park for Game 3 of the NLCS tonight — Hideki Kuroda (8-7, 3.76) and Cliff Lee (14-13, 3.22) have the ball.
too many errors in this game…. it was difficult to watch…. and the fact that it went into the wee hours of the morning totally disrupting my study schedule….. ohhhh welll
