Willis McGahee had his bell seriously rung against the Steelers in January
Wow, I was caught completely off guard by this development: Accoring to a New York Times report, NFL players are more likely to suffer dementia-related illnesses later on in life. So you’re telling me all that head-cracking has an effect on the brain?
Actually, that’s the least surpsrising thing I’v heard in a long time, since it seems every other day you hear a story of a former football player suffering from brain damage, if they’re not dead already, that is. However, the New York Times study comes with some actual statistics: A survey of retired players aged 50 or older reported that 6.1 percent received some sort of dementia diagnosis, up from 1.2 percent in the general population. Players aged 30-49 reported a rate of 1.9 percent, up from the general rate of 0.1 percent.
I’m not sure if these results will lead to any changes, since turning football into a non-contact sport would more than likely disentigrate its fan base. Any diehard flag football fans out there?
