Stephen Jackson, winner of this week's Gilbert Arenas Award for biggest idiot in the NBA
When morons speak, it’s always good to listen, because there’s a good chance they’re going to say something stupid. With today being media day for the Golden State Warriors (as well as several other NBA teams, including the Raptors), you had to figure it was only a matter of time before Stephen Jackson opened his mouth and made himself look like an idiot. It didn’t take long.
Jackson, who has been lobbying for a trade despite signing a three-year, $28 million contract extension last November, started by calling the group of reporters waiting for him “vultures” and then announced he doesn’t regret asking to be dealt. In fact, he went a step further, saying he doesn’t regret anything he’s done in his career, including going into the stands with Ron Artest in 2004 and knocking out a bunch of Pistons fans. He didn’t address whether he regretted off-the-court incidents, such as the one that had him firing a gun outside a strip club with then-Pacer teammates Marquis Daniels and Jamal Tinsley (two model citizens in their own right), but I’m guessing that’s a no as well.
Here’s my suggestion to Jackson: Forget about trying to be traded. You obviously think you’re a pretty good basketball player, so shouldn’t you be able to lead a team to the playoffs on your own? Don’t get me wrong — it’s a team effort, but how about you lead that team, you know, since you’re such an awesome player?
