The legendary Ernie Harwell
Sad news from the world of baseball: Legendary Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell revealed this morning he has an inoperable form of bile duct cancer. With the clock ticking, how does the 91-year-old plan on spending his time? Well, not with George Costanza, to say the least.
“We don’t know how long this lasts,” he told the Detroit Free Press. “It could be a year, it could be much less than a year, much less than a half a year. Who knows? Whatever’s in store, I’m ready for a new adventure. That’s the way I look at it.
“I don’t have any pain at the moment,” he added. “Because I’ve lost weight, I can eat almost everything I wanted to. I’ve come back to my childhood with ice cream and all those good things.”
I don’t know what it is about broadcasters, but they all seem to be great men. Maybe it has something to do with spending much of their lives watching and talking about baseball. Harwell spent 55 years in the business, including 42 with the Tigers (1960-2002). He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1989.
All the best, Ernie.
