Rios: Not exactly killing it in Chicago
As mind-numblingly horrible as the past three months have been, Jays fans can find a bit of relief in this: Alex Rios is still a bum. Personally, I was secretely terrified he’d get red-hot upon leaving Toronto, but it’s actually been quite the opposite. Through today, he’s hitting .156 (10-for64) with one homer, three RBIs, one walk and 16 strikeouts (!) in 16 games with the White Sox. Plus, Chicago decided to pack it in earlier this week, placing Jim Thome and Jose Contreras on waivers and seeing them scooped up by the Dodgers and Rockies, respectively. Of course, the Rios acquisition was a long-term move, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and say a few people in the White Sox front office wish they had a mulligan.
Meanwhile, Scott Rolen is picking up after a slow start in Cincinnati and a stint on the disabled list after a beanball — he’s hitting .341 (14-for-41) since being reactivated August 23 and .291 (16-for-55) with a homer in 14 games with the Reds overall. It’s not all good with Rolen, however. According to Drunk Jays Fans, Mike Wilner reported last night Rolen wasn’t exactly the most popular player amongst teammates and the media during his stay in Toronto. Not that it really matters, since he was the best hitter not named Aaron Hill or Adam Lind to put on a Blue Jays jersey this season.
Anyway, the Rios-less Jays wrap up their set with the Rangers tonight in Arlington, with Scott Richmond facing fellow rookie Tommy Hunter.
