Poor little Andy
The above headline and accompaning story by Mark Feinsand was printed in the New York Daily News today.
Fact: The indomitable (as the New York media would have you believe, at least) Andrew Pettitte had a perfect game with two outs in the seventh last night before Jerry Hairston Jr. let a routine ground ball go through his legs.
Fact: The very next hitter, Nick Markakis, singled, and Melvin Mora hit a homer in the eighth.
So technically, Hairston didn’t cost Pettitte a perfect game. Pettitte would’ve blown it himself the next inning anyway. Nice to see the New York media is still crazy about Pettitte, despite him not having an ERA below 4.00 with the Yankees since 2003, which was three years after the team won its last World Series. Must be relieving to know you’re immune, despite being a mediocre starter whose biggest strength is inning eating, which is probably the result of the steroids he admitted to taking. Keep truckin’ Little Andy, and keep your head up Junior Hairston.
