When Roy Halladay doesn’t have it, games just aren’t worth playing. Well, at least not if you’re the Jays’ offense. Doc had a rare off-night Wednesday, giving up eight hits and five runs (four earned) in five innings and the Jays lost to Boston for the second straight night, 6-1.

Halladay got into trouble early, giving up a solo homer to a roided-up David Ortiz on a 1-2 curveball in the second and an RBI single to Alex Gonzalez later in the inning. Doc never settled in, and Jason Bay’s two-run homer in the fifth pretty much signalled the end of his night. On a positive note, Josh Roenicke pitched three shutout innings, though that may have had something to do with there being no lead or tie to blow. The Jays only managed six hits — all singles — and Vernon Wells drove home the only run in the fourth.

Thankfully, the series wraps up tonight with a battle of lefties — Brett Cecil makes his first start in 12 days for Toronto against Boston’s Jon Lester.
