Another tough night for Kerry Joseph
Well, so much for an upset. The Argos were badly outplayed on both sides of the ball last night in Montreal, falling 25-0 to the Alouettes. Toronto managed just 126 yards of total offense and allowed Anthony Calvillo to carve their defense to the tune of 395 yards on 35-of-43 passing attempts. The numbers of his counterpart, Kerry Joseph? A paltry 7-of-14 for 61 yards before getting knocked out in the fourth quarter.
First, the game: The shutout was the first in the CFL in four years, with Toronto the last to do so in 2004 (48-0 against Hamilton). The loss was also the Argos’ fourth straight against Montreal, each by at least 15 points. Toronto again wasn’t able to establish their rushing game early and only got the ball to Jamal Robertson, the league’s second leading rusher coming in, six times.
Next, Joseph: If last season wasn’t evidence enough, it’s pretty clear now Joseph isn’t near the player he was when he led Saskatchewan to the Grey Cup in 2007 and captured Most Outstanding Player honors. If he still has it in him, it’s yet to be seen, save for a three game stretch (all losses) at the end of last season in which he threw 11 touchdown passes (of his 17 for the season). With NFL cuts to be made over the next month, it should be interesting to see what kind of candidates pop up to potentially replace the Argos’ quarterback.
