"I didn't do it"
Guess what? David Ortiz didn’t use steroids after all. That’s what he’ll have you believe, at least. The lovable cheater finally broke his 10-day silence this afternoon, apologizing for being a distraction but insisting he never bought nor used steroids. The positive test? A result of careless use of over-the-counter supplements. Wow, I’ve never heard that excuse before. Get outta here Big Papi, and take your impressive .219 batting average with you.
Interestingly, Ortiz wasn’t the only player addressing a fall from grace today — Texas’ Josh Hamilton, the darling of last season’s Home Run Derby who overcame a crippling drug addiction to hit 32 homers and drive in 130 runs, came clean about photos leaked of him partying at an Arizona bar in January. Seems the outfielder had a bit of a slip-up prior to Spring Training, which he apparently dealt with immediately with the help of his support group, which includes his wife, his team and Johnny Narron, a special assistant the Rangers brought in to hold Hamilton accountable. This morning, the pictures showed up on Deadspin. Instead of claiming they were outdated or doctored, Hamilton went the honest route — he pled to being human. Not surprisingly, the media is already warming to him.
What’s stopping you from telling the truth, Papi? Your legacy is ruined (along with your team’s) and nobody outside Boston believes you, so why not get the ball rolling and become one of the first ‘roided freaks to come clean (completely clean, A-Rod)? If you want to win back any favor, you might as well start now.
