How do you live with yourselves?
One night Vernon Wells rips a clutch double and the Jays lose, the next he AND Alex Rios hit back-to-back two-out RBI singles and the Jays suffer the same fate. Sometimes life just isn’t fair. Toronto dropped the finale of their two-game set with the Yankees last night, falling 8-4 thanks to — get this — some shaky bullpen work. Well, at least not everything was out of the ordinary.
Mark Rzepcynski strung together a solid outing, taking a 3-2 lead to the seventh before giving up a leadoff jack to Nick Swisher and double to Robinson Cano, who’d come around to score along with two more New York runs, courtesy of Josh Roenicke. The poor guy looked like he was going to break down in tears when he walked off the mound. Don’t worry kid, two runs in an inning of relief is expected around here. Marco Scutaro hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh, but the Yankees added runs in the eighth and ninth to put it out of reach.
On a refreshing note, today is an off-day followed by tomorrow’s much-anticipated alumni ceremony. Lots of guys are in town already — Roberto Alomar was in Tuesday, and last night I saw Tom Henke, Duane Ward, John Olerud, Woody Williams, Pat Hentgen and Candy Maldonado making their way around field level. I’ve heard they’re expecting 35-45 players from the ’92-’93 teams, so it should be a riot. The Orioles are also in town, so it may mean the Jays have a shot at winning too.
