Brett Cecil, looking pretty fine these days

When Brett Cecil first came up in early-May, he looked quite solid. Then he looked horrible for a bit. Now he’s starting to look like he could be a pretty, pretty, pretty good starter in this league after all. Cecil gave up just one run in seven innings today against Tampa Bay, snapping Toronto’s three-game losing streak and beating the Rays 5-1. In his last three starts, Cecil has given up just one run in 20 innings, lowering his ERA to 4.27.

Cecil kept the Rays off the basepaths much of the afternoon, giving up just four hits, one of which was a solo blast by Carl Crawrford in the sixth that accounted for Tampa Bay’s only run. Scott Rolen was his normal incredible self for the Jays, hitting a three-run homer in the third and making another impressive defensive play earlier in the same inning. This time Rolen robbed Jason Barlett of a hit, diving to his left and throwing from the ground to get the out. Adam Lind also added a pair of hits, including his 33rd double (second in all of baseball), and scored twice.

So, a positive finish to a pretty brutal 4-5 homestand. Next, the Jays head to Seattle for a three-game set with the Mariners. Ricky Romero (8-4, 3.44) gets the ball tomorrow against King Felix Hernandez (11-3, 2.45).
