Happ: Future Jay?
Yesterday I mentioned trade talks between the Jays and Phillies were heating up, despite Roy Halladay saying after Friday’s game he doesn’t expect to be moved before the deadline. Here’s an update on the talks: The Jays asked for a package that included J.A. Happ, who’s 7-1 with a 2.97 ERA with Philadelphia this season, as well as top pitching prospect Kyle Drabek (10-2, 2.80 between A and AA) and outfield prospect Dominic Brown (.295/9 HR/41 RBI/14 SB in high A). The Phillies balked and countered with an offer of Happ and three AAA players — outfielder Michael Taylor (.333/15/65 in AA before being recently called up), shortstop Jason Donald (.230/1/16) and pitcher Carlos Carrasco (6-9, 5.18). Though both are struggling this season, Donald and Carrasco were considered two of the top Phillies prospects coming into 2009. I can’t claim to know much about Taylor, but those AA numbers look mighty fine. Should be interesting to see how these negotiations develop over the next few days.
On a related note, while looking into the Phillies prospects, I found a familiar name on their AAA roster — a left-hander by the name of Gustavo Chacin. Yep, THE Gustavo Chacin of Chacin Cologne fame. Chacin hasn’t seen the majors since April 2007, but looks like he may be on track to return at somepoint, somewhere — he’s 5-3 with a 3.65 ERA in 10 starts for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.
