Argos’ long snapper Randy Srochenski may just be the closest thing the CFL has to Brett Favre. No, the Regina native hasn’t shattered any passing records, but like the legendary quarterback, he can’t seem to make up his mind whether or not he wants to keep playing football.
“I spoke to (GM and Vice President) Adam Rita a few times in the off-season and told him I’m here in a pinch,” he said after practice Thursday.
Despite retiring from football last winter, Srochenski took Rita up on an offer this pre-season, coming in to continue working with fellow long snapper Steve Schmidt, who he mentored much of last season.
“I’m just happy to help out,” said Srochenski, who won’t go as far as to say he’s officially un-retired. “Right now it’s on a game-to-game basis.”
The 36-year-old has a reason for not fully committing to football — he’s senior pastor of Niagara Celebration Church in St. Catharines. Despite his hands being full, the Argos have been willing to accommodate Srochenski’s schedule.
Meanwhile, Saturday’s home opener against Saskatchewan marks a big occasion for Srochenski. Not only is he a Regina native — he also spent seven seasons with the Roughriders.
“There are still lots of guys I know and played with,” he said. “It’s always fun playing them.”
