Alex Rios, having a blast
Russ Adams is a Blue Jay once again and the team, not coincidentally, is a winner. Toronto managed to escape Washington with a win against the Nationals, 9-4 this afternoon, and don’t try telling me it didn’t have to do the the re-call of the shortstop of the future. Adams even got a shot pinch hitting in the ninth, and picking up where he left off with his grand slam off Jonathan Papelbon in September 2007, singled up the middle. More great Russ Adams moments to come, Jays fans.
Toronto got another solid start from Ricky Romero, who gave up just two runs in seven innings, winning his fourth game and lowering his ERA to 3.59. The Jays scored early and often for the rookie, piling on six runs through the first three frames. Lyle Overbay jacked his ninth homer and drove in five runs and clutch hitter extraordinaire Alex Rios had a pair of hits and drove in three.
The win means the Jays finish their interleague trip to Philly and Washington with four wins in six games — nice, though a bit disappointing considering how things started off. Nonetheless, Toronto improves to 38-33 and can pull to within a game of the Yankees for the wildcard if the Marlins can lend a hand this evening. Next up is a day off before the Jays start a three-gamer at Rogers Centre against longtime rival Cincinnati.
