Scotty Richmond, before it all fell apart
Well, one night the Jays rough up the best pitcher in baseball, then follow it up with a loss against a guy coming in with a 10.80 ERA in three starts. Last night’s 9-3 win over Zack Greinke and the Royals doesn’t seem as sweet after a 6-2 loss to Luke Hochevar this afternoon.
Toronto used three homers to cruise to last night’s win, and this afternoon looked like a walk in the park until Scott Richmond, who was nearly flawless through the first four frames, coughed up five runs in the fifth and failed to survive the inning. The Jays had a chance in the seventh with runners on second and third with two outs, but Cito Gaston opted to let Raul Chavez, a .227 career hitter, bat with Aaron Hill and Scott Rolen on the bench. Sure, Chavez homered earlier in the game, but I’m guessing of his now six career home runs, no two came in the same game.
The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for Kansas City, which has also lost 20 of 25. The Jays send some pitcher I’ve never heard of named Roy Halladay to the mound tomorrow, where he’ll face perennial Cy Young candidate Kyle Davies.
